Specialist driving lessons: ADHD/ADD, autism and PDD-NOS
People with autism spectrum conditions such as autism, Asperger, PDD-NOS, ADHD and ADD are welcome at Rijschool Reza, without any extra costs.
When is a specialist lesson needed?
Many more people are better off with a specialist lesson. This is, however, not common knowledge, which leads to people being afraid of starting their driving lessons. There's no need for that! At Rijschool Reza we have experience with guiding clients with ADHD, PDD-NOS, autism and many more. With the helping hand of our strategies we hope to guide you to getting your driver's license.
Specialist lesson in which car?
Rijschool Reza has both a shift car and an automatic. When the choice has been made in which car will be studied, the student will be assigned a car and by default every driving lesson will be driven in the same car. We always recommend driving a gearshift car if possible. This is because if the exam is taken in an automatic, you will only receive a license for an automatic. As a result, you will not be authorized to drive a shift car later on. It is not a problem to switch from a shift car to an automatic when you are already taking specialized driving lessons.
Health Declaration CBR
Often someone with ADHD/ADD or ASD has to fill in a YES on the health declaration of the CBR (formerly Eigen Verklaring) at question 3 and with medication use also at question 9. This almost always results in a driving test. During a driving test, an examiner checks whether you are fit to drive. This includes paying attention to the distribution of attention. This means that you can occupy yourself with the operation of the vehicle and meanwhile also look around you at the traffic and the traffic situation. In this medical course we will of course guide and support the student as much as possible. The advice is to do the driving test after about 20 hours of driving lessons.
I have ADHD, ADD or autism and would like to get my driver's license
Every candidate who wants to apply for an exam should get a certificate of fitness from the CBR. Especially with ADHD, ADD or autism, we recommend to fill in the health declaration on mycbr right at the beginning of the driver training. Here you will have to answer a question with YES and then the CBR will process the declaration. There are waiting times and it will take about 4 weeks before you get an answer from CBR. Then there will be an examination by an independent specialist appointed by the CBR. There is always a driving test in which the CBR assesses whether you can participate in traffic in a safe and responsible manner and whether you can drive the car properly. CBR's advice is to have driven at least 20 hours of lessons before taking a driving test at the CBR.
In the following leaflets from the CBR you will find everything about the route to be followed in case of ADHD, ADD or autism

Introduction
For people who need a more gentle approach, we almost always start with an introductory morning or afternoon. A fairly unique method that few driving schools offer. The introduction consists of a total of 3 hours of lessons. After a brief explanation of what we are going to do that day, you will begin the practical lessons together with the instructor, and possibly with up to 1 other student, in a quiet parking lot. Here you will learn in a relaxed manner to master the basic principles of driving well before you go on public roads. Also, the instructor gets a much better idea of how you pick up driving and will therefore be able to give you appropriate and honest advice. This way of approach gives the students a lot of confidence and this gives them a better start with the beginning of their driving course.
